MID CENTURY VELOS DESK ACCESSORIES
STREAMLINED ALUMINIUN PENCIL SHARPENER AND HOLE PUNCH
A pair of heavy duty desk items circa 1940's/50's from British brand VELOS, a subsidiary of Rees, Pitchford & Co (advert shown is from 1947 courtesy of www.gracesguide.co.uk).
Robustly built in cast in aluminium with steel and brass details both function extremely well. Each item has been dismantled, lubricated, sharpened (where required) cleaned and polished to enhance curvaceous lines inspired by aviation and automotive design.
The hole punch or 'HEAVY DUTY PERFORATOR' can be adjusted between 7 & 8cm via the knurled knob on the top. A paper guide is pulled out from the side to accomodate different sized stationary.
The streamlined design of the pencil sharpener owes a large debt of gratitude to Raymond Loewy's design of 1933 (which was never put into production). It would benefit from being screwed down on a fixed surface (we can include a hardwood plinth if required), it is also missing a recepticle to catch the shavings. A dial on the front is turned to select the appropriate pencil diameter, once in position the handle on the back is turned to operate the sharpening burrs.
