Price Bristol stoneware lamps.
Honey glazed barrels, complete with squirell cage bulbs.
.................................................................................
We love a local find with a story to tell. It wasn't until we began researching the Price Bristol marks on these salt glazed stoneware kegs or barrels that we began to understand the extent of pottery production in Bristol and it's importance to the grocery trade.
The Price brothers (later merging with Powell to form Price, Powell & Co) occupied several potteries in the Temple and St.Thomas's areas of Bristol from the early 19th century and were in operation right up until 1961.
Specialising in containers for beers, spirits, condiments and other commestables their stoneware was salt glazed inside and out allowing produce to be preserved and kept cool whilst in transit, enabling otherwise perishable products to be exported.
This attractive pair of barrels or kegs held one gallon of liquid and would have sat on a grocers shelf with a tap at the bottom allowing a measured quantity of liquid to be dispensed. We have simply converted them to lamps which can be used as shown with the squirell cage bulbs on display or fitted with shades (the antique brass standard ES lampholders have shade rings).
Each lamp comes complete with bulb, wired with two metres of black cloth covered braided flex, an inline switch and vintage style black plug and PAT test.
£145.00 each / £280 for the pair
