Antique Hope Works Walsall cast iron bench.
1915 base. Reclaimed Cedar seat.
This versatile narrow bench was in a sorry state when we acquired it, with a rotten wooden top and flaking painted ironwork. It was only on stripping back the layers of old paint we discovered that it was made exactly a century ago at the Hope Works Ironworks in Walsall.
We restored another similar bench a couple of years ago and have seen them variously described as railway, military or cricket benches. This may be because the clever interlocking design allows the bench to break down into its componant parts for easy transportation. The ironwork is secured to the top by chunky threaded bolts, one through each leg and another where the centre supports meet.
The ironwork has been burnished to a characterful patina and sealed. As the original top had perished beyond restoration we replaced it with a piece of natural, oiled cedar which is light weight yet robust enough to be used outdoors. The benche's dimensions make it ideal for a narrow hallway, at the end of a bed or anywhere extra seating is required.
