EDL switched desk lamp.
Oak desk tidy for your favourite pens!
We have restored many an EDL in the past, some of them dating right back to the 1920's (EDL Lighting Ltd started in 1922 and still operate from their base in Rugeley, Staffordshire), but they have all been the large, sturdy, box sectioned arm lamps they made as lathe worker's task lamps.
This one is smaller, seemingly less common and certainly rather more elegant. Clearly intended as a desk lamp rather than something intended to have a more industrial purpose, it has round tubular sectioned arms very much in a style mimicking the smooth flowing lines which became synonymous with lamps designed by "Dugdills".
The original paint on this one is in very nice condition and features the original EDL makers mark as a water transfer; certainly far too much history to polish away. We gave it a complete nut-&-bolt disassembly, cleaned each component and rebuilt it fitting some new red braided cable which suits the design and colours on the maker's mark. The cable is routed through the original on/off toggle switch and the lamp comes with a new black plug and will be PAT tested prior to despatch to a buyer.
To allow it to stand freely on a desk we have manufactured a solid oak base and (being slightly geeky) routed a couple of straight channels into the surface so that you can keep those often-used writing implements conveniently to hand. We were feeling so pleased with the German Rademacher lamp we recently restored that we felt that this EDL deserved the same treatment (see the picture gallery to see them both side by side).
The maximum reach is 20 inches (each arm is 10 inches to the loint centres) and the shade is 3 inches in diameter. The lamp will come fitted with our new 'standard' bulb; a "small globe", 5watt, LED bulb which gives the same light output as a regular 40watt bulb.
