Vintage Dugdills 21 inch articulated Task Lamp.
Full restoration. LED bulb retrofit.
Designed as task lighting for machine workers and craftsmen, Dugdills lamps pre-date most of our War-Time and Post-War machinist's lamps such as those by Memlite and EDL. Where those are box sectioned steel and their form is strongly led by their function, Dugdills are all elegant, beautifully designed lamps (although no less functional for that).
John Dugdill began making lamps in 1907. The family firm manufactured a wide range of electrical fittings in Stockport, Lancashire during the first half of the 20th century and Dugdill lamps are considered by many to be the pinnacle of early industrial lighting. Elegantly proportioned tubular arms flare and separate at their ends forming integrated, sculptural side members. Domed washers and steel hex bolts finish off joints an architect would have been proud to have designed. In restoring a number of these lamps, it has become evident that both the quality of the steel used and the level of engineering employed by Dugdills were both peerless. For a lamp in it's ninth decade of life (!) this one has polished back to a quite magnificent finish.
The Base Arm is 6 inches long and the Reach Arm is 15 inches. The Reach Arm features a clamped brass collar, common to all Dugdills lamps, which allows rotation of the arm. The un-dented shade is 4 inches long with a diameter of 3&1/4 inches.All new braided cable runs to the bulb holder, an "SBC" small bayonet fiting to which we have added a touch of cutting edge, 21st century technology - a 5watt LED bulb (40watt equivalent).
Readily fitted to either a horizontal or vertical surface, this will make a beautiful task lamp for a desk/ work place, or beside a bed or that favourite chair in the living room. A great investment and a wonderful object which will outlive us all.
At buyer's request this lamp will be fitted with a 12 inch wired tail, for an electrician to connect to your circuits, or a length of plugged, trailing cable with in-line switch.
