DOWN BROS GLAZED MEDICAL CABINET
GLAZED FOUR SIDES, POLISHED STEEL WITH COPPER & BRASS ACCENTS
A good size glazed medical cabinet in steel, with copper hinges, chromed 'T' handle, brass escutcheon and makers plaque. Hand stripped, inside and out, then gently burnished to enhance the stunning combination of metals whilst leaving a characterful patina. Unusual, being glazed on four sides and slightly larger than many wall hung examples, this cabinet is designed to sit on a piece of furniture. Supplied with a pair of thick glass shelves with ground and polished edges, there are supports for a further shelf (not supplied) but this set up is ideal for housing larger items below.
DIMENSIONS: height 61cm
ORIGIN: London SE1.
Illustrations from Down Bros catalogue 1885, we believe this is a later example of their
'GP Cabinet' dating from the 1st quater of the 20th century.
CONDITION: Good, some nibbles to the back edge of the shelves (not visible).
No key at present but we may be able to source one.
This cabinet has our living steel finish, sealed with a specialist flexible hydrophobic air drying oil followed by a high quality wax. This is a finish we have perfected over many years which will not chip or flake unlike most lacquers which sit on the surface of the metal and are vulnerable to scratching.
