We found this lamp languishing in a photographers studio with a bashed up reflector as a shade. It has taken a while but we have finally sourced an authentic looking replacement shade, this and the flex are the only parts of the lamp which are not original.
The history of the Bestlite is well documented, designed and produced for Best & Lloyd in the 1930's by Robert Dudley Best. Best was a British student of the Bauhaus, the lamp exemplifies their ethos of 'form follows function' making it an enduring favourite with architects and designers.
In production since the 1930's, in recent years the Bestlite has been manufactured by a Danish firm (GUBI) who have kept the name alive and introduced some new finishes whilst preserving the integrity of the original design.
Original models have the distinctive regd. number and figure stamped on the arm joint. Also present is the 'matchstick' style on/off switch at the lamp holder and exposed ball and socket joint at the neck.Although the Chromed parts show some pitting and the enamelled iron base is chipped in places we have chosen to leave 'as is' to emphasise the age of the lamp.
It has been carefully cleaned and re-assembled, with a new earthing point added at the base. It was then re-wired with three metres of cloth covered black flex and a vintage style black plug. This lamp will be PAT tested at the time of purchase which is valid for a 12 month period.
